Indian Ridge Hike Guide in Jasper National Park

The Indian Ridge hike is one of the most spectacular alpine hikes in Jasper National Park. This hike combines everything that makes hiking in the Canadian Rockies unforgettable — alpine ridges, panoramic mountain views, and scrambling sections.

What makes Indian Ridge especially unique is the option to access the trail using the Jasper SkyTram. Instead of spending hours climbing through the forest, hikers can quickly reach the alpine zone and spend more time enjoying the stunning ridgeline views.

I especially loved this hike, mostly for the sweeping, incredible views, but also for its remoteness. It is not a busy trail, and you might find yourself the only one on the mountain.

Indian Ridge Trail information

Is the Indian Ridge Hike Worth It?

Absolutely.

The Indian Ridge hike delivers some of the most spectacular alpine scenery in Jasper National Park. Unlike shorter viewpoint hikes, this trail feels wild, adventurous and remote.

Once you leave The Whistlers summit behind, the crowds quickly disappear, and the trail transforms into a stunning alpine traverse with jaw-dropping mountain views in every direction.

This hike is perfect for hikers looking for:

  • A true alpine hiking experience
  • Panoramic Rocky Mountain views
  • A quieter alternative to the more famous Jasper hikes
  • A more adventurous ridge hike
  • Incredible photography opportunities

If you enjoy exposed ridgelines and high mountain scenery, Indian Ridge is easily one of the best hikes near Jasper.

Using the Jasper SkyTram vs Hiking From the Bottom

Hikers have two options to reach Indian Ridge.

Option 1 — Hike From the Bottom

The first option is to hike up The Whistlers before continuing toward Indian Ridge.

This option adds approximately 13 extra kilometres to the hike, turning it into a 26-kilometre day with roughly 12 hours of hiking.

This route is best suited to experienced hikers seeking a major challenge.

Option 2 — Take the Jasper SkyTram

The second option — and the one most hikers choose — is taking the Jasper SkyTram to the upper station.

It allows hikers to immediately access the alpine environment and focus on the most scenic section of the route.

Booking tickets online for the Sky Tram is highly recommended during the summer.

How to Get to the Indian Ridge Trail

The trail begins from the upper station of the Jasper SkyTram, located south of the Jasper townsite.

After exiting the tram, follow the busy trail toward the summit of The Whistlers. The summit is located just over one kilometre from the upper station.

Beyond this point, the crowds thin out significantly as the trail continues toward Indian Ridge.

Trail Breakdown

Jasper SkyTram Upper Station to The Whistlers Summit

The first section of the hike is straightforward and busy.

The trail climbs gradually toward the summit of The Whistlers along a well-defined path. Even though this section is short, the views are already impressive.

From the summit, you can admire the Athabasca Valley, the surrounding mountain ranges and the Jasper townsite far below.

It is also a great place to pause before continuing toward the more adventurous ridge section.

The Whistlers Trail Toward Indian Ridge

For hikers continuing toward Indian Ridge, the experience changes quickly.

The maintained summit trail gives way to a more rugged alpine route crossing grassy meadows and rocky ridges. While there are a few trail markers, the path itself remains fairly easy to follow.

This section feels much wilder and more remote than the initial climb to The Whistlers.

The surrounding scenery is spectacular from every angle.

Ridge Traverse and Scrambling Sections

The ridge traverse is the highlight of the Indian Ridge hike.

The route follows an alpine ridgeline with sweeping views across the Canadian Rockies. There are a few scrambling sections that require hand use, but nothing overly technical for experienced hikers.

The exposure becomes more noticeable here, especially on windy days.

One thing that surprised me during this hike was how cold and powerful the wind became near the ridge. Even in summer, the alpine environment can feel icy and harsh. You will likely want to add an outer layer, gloves, and a warm hat once you step on the ridge.

Final Push to Indian Ridge

The final approach to Indian Ridge includes rocky terrain and additional elevation gain before reaching the summit area.

Standing on Indian Ridge surrounded by endless peaks is an unforgettable experience.

Views From Indian Ridge

The scenery from Indian Ridge is incredible from start to finish.

On a clear day, hikers can enjoy views of:

  • Mount Edith Cavell
  • The Athabasca Valley
  • Jasper townsite
  • The Whistlers summit area

It is one of the best hikes near Jasper for panoramic photography.

Is the Indian Ridge Hike Difficult?

Yes. Indian Ridge is considered a difficult hike.

While taking the SkyTram removes a large amount of elevation gain, the trail still includes:

  • Long alpine sections
  • Exposure to heights
  • Scrambling
  • Loose rocky terrain
  • Significant elevation gain
  • Rapid weather changes

The ridge sections can also feel intimidating to hikers who are uncomfortable with exposure.

Can Beginners Do the Indian Ridge Hike?

This hike is better suited for intermediate or experienced hikers.

Strong beginners with good fitness and some mountain hiking experience may still enjoy the trail if conditions are ideal.

However, hikers unfamiliar with scrambling or exposed ridges may find certain sections stressful.

If weather conditions deteriorate or the wind becomes too strong, turning around is the safest decision.

Weather Considerations

The weather is one of the most important factors on the Indian Ridge trail.

The route is highly exposed with very little shelter from the elements. It can be extremely windy up on the ridge.

Conditions can change quickly in the alpine environment.

Even during summer, I strongly recommend packing gloves, warm layers and a waterproof jacket. Wind chill near the ridge can make temperatures feel much colder than they actually are.

Always check the forecast before heading out and avoid hiking during thunderstorms.

Wildlife

You are hiking in bear country.

Carry bear spray, know how to use it and keep it easily accessible at all times.

Other wildlife commonly seen in the area includes marmots, pikas and mountain goats.

Safety tips for Indian Ridge

  • Wear proper hiking footwear
  • Bring extra layers
  • Carry plenty of water
  • Start early
  • Stay back from steep ridge edges
  • Avoid hiking during poor weather

What to Bring for the Tangle Ridge Hike

Because of the difficulty and exposure, proper hiking gear is essential.

I recommend bringing:

Nearby Attractions

There are several incredible places to visit near Indian Ridge.

Mount Edith Cavell

One of the most iconic mountain destinations in Jasper National Park, featuring glaciers, alpine scenery and beautiful hiking trails.

Valley of the Five Lakes

A family-friendly trail known for its vibrant turquoise lakes.

Maligne Lake

One of the most famous lakes in the Canadian Rockies is home to the iconic Spirit Island.

Pyramid Mountain

Another amazing hiking and scrambling adventure in Jasper is reaching Pyramid Mountain’s summit.

Roche Miette

Roche Miette Mountain is not for the faint of heart. The moderate scramble is a fun challenge but brings hikers to exposed ridges. The climb is gruesome, but the views are stunning.

Final Thoughts on the Indian Ridge Hike

The Indian Ridge hike is one of Jasper National Park’s best hidden gems.

Combining the Jasper SkyTram with an exposed alpine ridge creates an unforgettable hiking experience filled with adventure and panoramic mountain scenery.

If you are looking for a hike that feels more rugged and adventurous than many popular Jasper trails, Indian Ridge absolutely deserves a place on your itinerary in the Canadian Rockies.
